For the past 10 weeks, a group of our Year 6 children have been going to Trent Bridge cricket ground every Thursday evening. Accompanied by Mrs Fox and Miss Zoppi (alternately), the children have taken part in a wide variety of educational booster sessions. Just read some of the reviews, Clare Kiggins at Trent Bridge has sent through to us.

Session 1: We very much enjoyed working with the group and seeing their enjoyment not only when on the ground tour but also when exploring ICT. The group listened well to instructions about using cameras and downloaded their photos successfully for future use. Photo Booth proved thoroughly entertaining for them as they took photos and experimented with special effects – Josh’s photo was gruesome and he and others delighted in that.

Thanks very much to Helen for all of her help and support with the group. She has taken information back to school about the programme of study over the next few weeks and this includes details of cricket coaching in weeks 3, 6 and 10.

Session 2: We really enjoyed working with the group and it was lovely to welcome Katie. The children practised a range of maths skills using the club shop facility and were happy to share their ideas and strategies for problem-solving. The Speed Stacks Challenge proved very popular and the boys particularly enjoyed the competitive element. Many thanks to Emma for her wonderful enthusiasm and support.

Session 3: The group was wonderful once again. They work together really well and are extremely polite and responsive. All pupils thoroughly enjoyed the cricket coaching session which concentrated on bowling skills. The maths session focused on ‘real life’ word problems followed by time to explore the Education City ICT program.
Many thanks to Helen for her wonderful support and enthusiasm.

Session 4: The group prepared questions to ask Notts player Charlie Shreck. They considered different question types, together with use of body language, voice control and listening skills. For all of them, nerves played a big part and they all did really well to overcome their worries. The maths activity focused on rapid recall of multiplication facts and we looked at using known facts to help with trickier problems. Many thanks to Emma for her constant support and encouragement. They started with a coaching session which focused on fielding skills. They found and checked their resting heart rate and discussed the benefits of a healthy lifestyle.During break time, the group followed instructions to make strawberry smoothies and carried out a lengthy discussion about their favourite authors in preparation for our book fair next week. They then discussed items in a ‘mystery bag’ which they established had an Olympic theme. This led to them creating a bank of exciting vocabulary in preparation for writing their own Olympic themed poem.Everyone in the group was absolutely delightful tonight. It is a real pleasure to work with them.

session 7: Tonight’s session focused on performance poetry. The group discussed features of different poetic forms before watching a video performance of the New Zealand Rugby Team Haka. They then practised chanting the words and discussed the rhythm, beat and syllables in each line. After performing the Maori version, the group worked in teams (boys and girls) to create their own Trent Bridge versions which they then performed in front of the video camera. Fantastic! We then visited the Wicket! Book Fair where each pupil was given the chance to select books to take home.

On Monday 22 March, there was a graduation evening at Trent Bridge for children and parents. Miss Zoppi and Mrs Fox were both at the event.

Caythorpe Diary Wednesday by Katie, Lucy, Alison and Elizabeth

Dear diary,Today was great! We did trapeze (the leap of faith!) It was terrifying but extremely exciting when we jumped it was amazing- that gush of wind that hits you is so TERRIFING! Not many people reached the bar but some people managed it, so well done them! Then we did the all aboard that included a lot off team work and HARD work! It was the hardest challenge they had set for us yet! Archery, just like everything else, was a lot of fun we played mini games- which was challenging…But when we set our minds to it, it was much much easier to do. Survivor is a very physical challenge for everyone- but we managed it. First of all we had to do signals to another group (with flags instead of talking to them directly.) The next stage of survivor was to build our own shelter that would keep us dry in the rainforest. Later that evening, we played a little game called ambush, (a bit like hide and seek, in the dark) and ended up at the end with a draw. Can’t wait till tomorrow!

Caythorpe diary

Monday and Tuesday

It’s been an action packed couple of days! We have already done so many things it’s hard to believe we arrived only yesterday. We’ve played areoball, traversed the high ropes, ridden quad bikes, played the world’s biggest game of cluedo and even found some time to sing songs round the campfire.

The food has been brilliant- it’s like dining in a restaurant three times a day. There’s a massive choice and everyone has found something that they like every meal time. On the subject of hotels…the rooms are great; almost palatial in fact- loads of space and even an en suite with power shower! The beds are comfortable and all the children enjoyed a restful first night’s sleep (no home sickness J) and will no doubt be enjoying an even longer sleep tonight after our hectic (14 hour non-stop) day.

The support shown by the children to one another has been a joy to witness. A number of children shed a few tears today as they stood looking at the ground thirteen metres away, but with the encouragement of their friends, managed to complete the challenge to be greeted with hugs, cheers and congratulations! The children are surprising themselves at what they can do when they push themselves that little bit harder.

Tomorrow promises to be as excitement filled as the last two days, and both I, and the children, can’t wait! More tomorrow.

Arthur Bull lives on Trent Road. Arthur was 100 years old on 9 January 2010 so we invited him into school to celebrate his birthday. Arthur showed us his card from the Queen congratulating him on his 100th birthday and the children gave him cards of their own. Arthur was a London fire fighter from 1939-1945 so the children had lots of questions for him about the Blitz. BBC Radio Nottingham recorded the event for broadcast on 12 January.
