On Saturday 29 November, over 20 of our children took part in the lantern parade from Broadgate Park to Beeston Square. Twiggy and Emma then switched on Beeston Christmas lights and a firework display lit up the night sky.

The lantern making had been led earlier in the week back in school by a professional artist from Broxtowe Borough Council. The lanterns were very impressive.

Year 4 Castleton Residential

Year 4 left school at 9.00am on Thursday 18th September. We arrived at Castleton at 11.00am without anyone being sick on the bus ! As everyone was very hungry we ate our lunch straight away. After lunch we were ready for our activities. Everyone was an archer, Miss Hollins, Mrs West and Miss Zoppi all managed to hit the target. Everyone took part in team games, stepping across a pretend river and trying to get as many people as possible on a matress whilst moving it. We then took on the role of Celts and Romans. The Romans building siege engines and the Celts defending their King and Queen. After dinner the children tried to make their beds! Some of them got lost under the quilt cover and had to be rescued. Fortunately with a little help from their teachers they all had a made up bed to sleep in that night. It was a relatively quiet night apart from one room where the children were threatened with sleeping on Miss Hollins floor. Not a sound was then heard after midnight!

The next day after a hearty breakfast we panned for precious stones. Everyone was pleased to have a bag full of gems to take home. Then it was time to climb the hill, Mrs West's dread. With Miss Hollins leading the line the climb only took a few minutes. Mrs West made it red-faced but triumphant! We spent time exploring the Keep and the castle walls. Our activities finished with the children marching in a Roman army formation. A great time was had by all!

Sensory Garden opens

Our sensory garden was officially opened on Monday 15th September 2008. This wonderfully tranquil area makes use of an area of ground which was formerly derelict.

The original idea came from one of our parents, Mrs Langley, in 2006. She led the initial fund raising efforts which culminated in a celebrity auction raising over £1000. Seimens and Marconi contributed a further £1000 and later that year we were lucky enough to receive £2000 from the John Thaw Trust (of Inspector Morse fame). Marshalls provided us with paving slabs for the pathway.

A competition was launched to see if one of our pupils could design a sensory garden. Rebekah Noyes, who was in Year 6 at the time, was judged to be the winner. Her design included plans, specifications for plants, and a 3-D model.

By 2008, after 2 years of fund raising, we were ready to build. Landmark Landscape Company constructed the sensory garden during the summer holiday 2008. By the time the children came back in september, the sensory garden was complete.

On 15th September, Rebekah Noyes, now in Year 8, came back to cut the blue ribbon and officially open the garden. A large crowd of parents, children and staff were there to witness the ceremony.

This is a tribute to the whole community in Beeston Rylands. Parents, pupils, staff and Governors have worked together to create a wonderful school. Rylands’ Girls win Football TournamentOn Wednesday 4 June, we sent a team consisting of Sarah, Hayley, Luci and Elly to the Broxtowe 3v3 Football Tournament. The competition took place down on the weirfields and involved scores of girls from schools all over the Broxtowe area. Our girls had decided to call themselves “The Tremendous Trio” and, on a very hot day, they certainly lived up to their name. In the morning, our girls played and won 6 matches in a row. This put them into the Champions League in the afternoon. The Tremendous Trio took the Champions League by storm; winning 5 matches and drawing 1. In total, the girls scored 26 goals and conceded only 4, making Rylands the winners of the Y5 & 6 trophy. This is the 3rd year in a row that we have won this tournament!
